CHAPTER 12

Danielle

My heart was lodged in my throat by six-inch white-hot nails and I couldn’t breathe. I stopped and ran a hand over my face. I wanted to throw up, then rush down the hall and demand privileges back so I could get the inside scoop on Dahlia.

I swear my world came to a halt when I got the call from Temperance. It took me back to the day my mom called and told me she was seeing a doctor for a rash on her breast. It turned out to be inflammatory breast cancer, and we lost her a little over two years later.

We were not going to lose Lia. We couldn’t. She was one of my ride-or-die people. I broke out in a cold sweat just thinking about it.

“What the hell was she thinking?” Deandra was pacing with me and not using her privileges to get information. Knowing her the way I did, she was too afraid of getting bad news and having to be the one to share it with us.

Dakota scowled at Dea. “What she was thinking was that we were doing shit to help her find this woman and save her life. She saw something horrific that hasn’t happened yet and we have been telling her we will do our best to find the woman. In reality, we haven’t done crap.”

Dreya sighed and nodded her head. “Kota’s right. I haven’t felt any urgency because I don’t have pictures in my head, keeping me up at night, haunting my every waking hour. However, you can bet if I had seen what she had, then I would do anything to help.”

Guilt froze me in my tracks alongside Dea. They were right. If I was honest with myself, I had hoped she would forget the mission. I’d been incredulous when she even suggested we investigate the crime. We weren’t detectives or patrol officers. We were freaking party planners. None of us had the skill set to investigate crimes.

“I ignored her,” I admitted. “I hoped our lack of experience with solving crimes would stop her from pursuing the woman.”

Noah's eyes widened, making me feel like I was a complete asshole. We had been close to the hospital thanks to the date we had been on. “You six are incredible women, but you are clinging to your previous lives. You aren’t those people anymore. You have new roles and need to adapt and change with the demands they bring.”

Lucas huffed and stood up. He was a big guy, and it was clear at the moment he was pissed. “Lia didn’t trust any of us to help her. We have all failed her and I will not allow that to happen again. If she doesn’t make it, I will make it my mission to find Blade and eliminate him myself.”

The powerful alpha’s voice cracked as he mentioned the possibility of Lia not surviving. This guy really cared for my sister. Their attraction was obvious and so much fun to watch. I wanted Lia to hear how much Lucas cared.
